Music in Grade 3

The big news for grade 3 is that we are learning recorder! For one lesson in every cycle, Mrs Liedlbauer & Mr Thompson are taking small groups to learn the recorder. In addition, the children are going to be investigating the subject of timbre & tone color. We will also be learning to sing a variety of challenging choral pieces.

Some NEWS about grade 3 recorders..

Instruments to borrow from the music room

If your child is keen to play recorder at home, we will very soon have some instruments available in the music room for you to check out.

If you prefer to buy your own, however, here are links to our Internet supplier.

This replaces the original offer to obtain recorders for you through the school.

(Wait until this comes out in the 3rd grade blog & you can click directly on the link!)

For the red recorder (Mrs Liedlbauer's group) with German fingering system:

For the blue recorder (Mr Thompson's group) with baroque fingering system:

Please note, there is absolutely no requirement for the children to practice between the lessons, or for you to have an instrument at home. Some of the children already seem quite enthusiastic about this activity, however. Practice material will be available for those children who want to take it after each lesson.

Later in the year

Because this is a new part of our music education offering, we will be monitoring the progress of our young players with great interest. It is possible that further choices of instrumental instruction might be available later in the year. Watch this space!

Art in Grade 3

Grade three students in Art class with Mrs. Gunn created a collage in a cooperative drawing game using mixed media and reviewing the elements of art-line, shape, texture and color. We discussed how we can express our uniqueness in our art work. Students have just received their sketchbooks which will be used for research and a portfolio record of their art project ideas. Students will be developing a collage design exploring the question “How can I express my identity through visual images and the art elements”. Students will be using a “Flip flop Shoe” card to express their personal identity.

If there are three 3rd grade classes going on a school trip and each class has 22 students in it. How many busses would be needed if each bus holds 22 people?
