Elementary School Mathematics Workshop

Mark your calendars for the morning of Wednesday March 2nd.   We hope to build on the success of last year's math day.  So please join your children in their classrooms for our second parent –student math open day.

You are invited to participate in one of our regular math workshops sessions. During the session we will play some of our interactive math games on the computers and the whiteboard. This is an opportunity for you to deepen your understanding of our constructivist approach to mathematics as your children move through the school. We hope to do this in a way that will be informative and fun for you and your children.

We will offer two sessions. The first will be from 9:00-9:40, when prep, grade one and grade two will be open for parents. The second will be from 9:45 - 10:25, when grades three, four and five will be open for parents

For parents who arrive early or who finish the session early we will be serving coffee in the foyer from 9:00-10:30.  This will be a good opportunity for you to socalise with other parents. Please check out our in-house television screen over your coffee. You will see some of our budding mathematicians demonstrating their learning.

What do you think makes a great story?

What does a good author need to think about when writing a new story?

What specific elements would YOU consider most important when YOU are writing a story?

What is art?

We're at the beginning of our new unit and so it's important that we think about what we already know and think. Yesterday the students worked in groups to discuss 'what is art?' without any input from the adults in the room who only observed. The groups of four came up with there own agreed definitions within a 15 minute time constrait. The discussions were very interesting and a lot of 'creative thinking' was happening. The conversations could have continued for a long time and many ideas were shared and scribed but the final task was to write one definitive sentence. There's lots more to talk about but here's what was created:

Art is everything with imagination, creation, feeling, memory and seeing.

Art is to be creative and to be allowed to show your feelings.

Art is feelings as you imagine interesting back ground pictures and painting landscapes.

Art means imagination, skill, concentration, creativity, and fun. It is a religion for creativity and being unique.

Art is feelings in pictures that usually have colour and can control emotions. Music is art.

Grade Three Provocation - Trip to K21

The central idea for the new third grade unit is:

'People express ideas and emotions through the arts'  

We're very excited because on Wednesday 19th January the 3rd grade students will be visiting the K21 modern art gallery in Düsseldorf!


K21 guides will be exploring the gallery with the children and discussing the work currently being exhibited. The students will have a mini-workshop with the guides after their tour.

Liebe Eltern,

gerne möchte ich Ihnen einen Überblick über die Inhalte des Deutschunterrichts in den vergangenen Wochen geben. 

Wir haben eine Personenbeschreibung in Form eines Rätsels verfasst: „Wer kann das wohl sein?". Die Vorarbeiten beinhalteten die Sammlung von passenden Adjektiven und Hilfen zur Textgestaltung: Wie kann die Beschreibung interessant klingen, obwohl es sich im Wesentlichen um eine Aufzählung handelt? Die Sätze mussten unterschiedlich lang sein und die Wortstellung darin nicht immer gleich. Die Schüler schrieben eine Vor- und eine Reinschrift und malten ein Porträt der von ihnen beschriebenen Person. Die Texte wurden in einem Rätselbüchlein zusammengefasst und mit viel Spaß wurden die Porträts den Beschreibungen zugeordnet.

Traditionsgemäß haben wir zu Sankt Martin eine Laterne gebastelt und in der Assembly mit der ganzen Schule Martinslieder gesungen. Im Deutschunterricht haben wir eine Geschichte von Sankt Martin und dem Bettler gelesen, die in einer sehr schönen, anspruchsvolleren Sprache verfasst war. Wir haben schöne, ungewöhnliche oder neue Ausdrücke aus der Geschichte gesammelt, Bedeutungen geklärt und einige dieser Ausdrücke in eigenen Sätzen verwendet. Zum Abschluss wurde die Geschichte von den Schülern abschnittsweise ausdrucksvoll vorgetragen.

Nach dem Basteln der Laterne haben wir einen Text geschrieben, in dem wir den Vorgang des Basteln beschrieben haben. Hiervon ausgehend wurde der Begriff der Zeitform „Perfekt" eingeführt.  Es wurden spielerische Übungen zur Wiederholung und Unterscheidung der Wortarten durchgeführt und auch die zum Verb gehörenden Begriffe  „Präsens" bzw. „Gegenwart" eingeführt.

Nach wie vor beginnen wir den Unterricht mit einigen Minuten des freien Lesens. Das  Antolin-Leseprogramm wird weiterhin von uns genutzt.
